Hardwood is so named because of its construction and complexity and does not necessarily bear any relation to the hardness of the wood. For instance some Softwoods can be harder than some Hardwoods. However, most hardwoods are more dense and 'harder' than softwoods hence their name.

Because Hardwoods are denser they are ideally suited to applications where a stronger and more durable wood might be needed, for instance in construction, flooring and furniture.
